Description of Courses and Activities

Language Arts (English & Spanish)
Instruction focuses on the development of reading comprehension, written expression, grammar, vocabulary acquisition, and oral communication skills. Instruction is provided in both English and Spanish, supporting bilingual language development, literacy skills, and effective communication through age-appropriate reading materials, writing activities, discussion, and guided practice.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction emphasizes number sense, basic and advanced operations, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Students engage in applied mathematics activities designed to strengthen computational fluency, critical thinking, and practical application of mathematical concepts appropriate to their grade level.
Science
Science instruction introduces students to life science, earth science, and physical science concepts through observation, inquiry, and hands-on learning activities. Instruction encourages curiosity, exploration, and understanding of scientific principles using age-appropriate experiments, projects, and guided discussions.
Social Studies
Social studies instruction includes history, geography, cultural awareness, and civic understanding. Students explore communities, historical events, cultural traditions, and foundational civic concepts through discussion, projects, and interdisciplinary activities that support critical thinking and social awareness.
Applied learning and projects
Enrichment activities support interdisciplinary learning through hands-on projects, cultural studies, creative activities, and applied learning experiences. These activities are designed to reinforce academic concepts, encourage creativity, and support practical skill development in a small-group instructional environment.
 
Optional Enrichment Activities (Parent-Selected)
In addition to the core instructional areas, XILA Academy may offer optional enrichment activities selected by parents as part of their child’s home education program. These activities are designed to support creativity, practical skills, language exposure, and interdisciplinary learning and may vary by availability and student interest.
 
World Languages
  • Spanish Language: Conversational language practice, vocabulary development, and cultural exposure appropriate to student age and level.
  • Portuguese Language: Introductory language exposure, basic communication skills, and cultural awareness through guided activities and interaction.
  • French Language: Introductory language exposure focused on basic vocabulary, simple expressions, pronunciation, and cultural awareness through interactive and age-appropriate activities.
Arts & Creative Expression
  • Arts & Crafts: Creative projects supporting fine motor skills, self-expression, and artistic exploration using age-appropriate materials and techniques.
 
Gardening & Environmental Learning
  • Gardening: Hands-on activities focused on plant care, environmental awareness, responsibility, and basic science concepts through outdoor and indoor gardening projects.
 
Technology & Computer Science
  • Computer Science: Introductory technology activities including basic computer skills, digital literacy, age-appropriate coding concepts, problem-solving, and responsible technology use through guided and project-based activities.
 
Physical Activity & Wellness
  • Physical Education: Age-appropriate physical activities focused on movement, coordination, fitness, teamwork, and overall wellness through structured and unstructured physical activity.
 
These enrichment activities are optional, parent-selected, and supplemental to the core instructional program. Availability and participation may vary and do not replace core academic instruction.
